The Mbegu Trust, Argwings Kodhek Grove, Nairobi, Kenya, are the organisers of two competitions to run between October and November 2009 (see `Closing date`, below).

The two competitions are to be called the ‘Lead On!’ competition and the ‘Cartoon competition’.

The competitions are open to all secondary school students in Kenya and any Kenyan aged between 12 and 18 years of age at the time of the closing date of the competition.

The two competitions are separate and will be judged separately.

Students may enter either competition, or both, but only one entry, per student, per competition will be accepted.

THE ‘LEAD ON!’ COMPETITION

Students will be asked to write an article of up to 600 words on the subject of ‘The leadership we need to build the Kenya and Africa we want’ and a further 200 words (maximum) on the subject of ‘How I can play a leading role’.

The ‘Lead On!’ competition will be judged on the originality, depth of argument and composition style of the entries.

Entries do not have to be on the official entry forms provided on the back of the Young Kenyan Leader but can be made on any sheet, or sheets, of paper but all entries must bear the name and school/college of the entrant.

Eight winning students will each receive Ksh 20,000 and their respective schools Ksh 100,000 each. Eight runners-up will each receive Ksh 5,000.

Two winning students will be offered internships by The Nation Media Group at their discretion.

Winners will be selected by a panel of judges.

Where the judges are evenly divided in their selection of a winning entry the decision of the Chairman of Judges will be final.

Prizes awarded to the schools of the winning pupils will be presented to the Headmaster, Headmistress or Principal.

Prizes awarded to winning students will be presented to the individuals concerned.
